OUR ALPACA'S
(Timone & Pumbaa arrived October 2023 followed by Vinnie V, Cameron, Wazza, Eli, Calvin & Paddington)
Suri Alpaca
The Suri alpaca is a fully domesticated alpaca that originates from the Vicuna (a protected wilderness area in the Andes mountains). The Suri is one of only two breeds of alpaca, with their close relatives being the Huacaya. Suri alpacas are hardy animals and produce a rare and soft fleece that makes them stand out against Huacayas.
Interestingly, out of the millions of alpacas found worldwide, the Suri is thought to make up less than 10% of the alpaca population, which is why they are a rare and unique breed of alpaca to farm or keep as pets.
Huacaya Alpaca
The Huacaya alpaca is a breed of alpaca (Lama pacos) that has a unique appearance and fiber quality. This breed is the most common alpaca breed in Australia. They have a totally different fleece structure to the Suri alpaca - appearing somewhat "teddy bear" in apperance.
Husbandry and nutritional requirements are the same as for the Suri and they require shearing yearly. Their fleece like the Suri is utilised for garments and other Alpaca fibre items.
